The Answers to The Late Summer FOOD Quiz

104 entries were received of which 47 were correct. 35 people had just one answer wrong!
The winners should be announced in the next couple of days. Thank you to everyone who took part. Here are the answers...

2.       Daft dope takes boat. (5,8) BAKED POTATOES – Anagram (‘Daft’) of ‘dope takes boat’.

3.       Poirot, for example, talks a lot of piffle! (7,7) BELGIAN WAFFLES – ‘Poirot’ is an ‘example’ of a BELGIAN, ‘talks a lot of piffle’ = WAFFLES.

4.       Heartless bugger unfortunately won cause. (5,5) BROWN SAUCE - ‘heartless bugger’ = BR, plus anagram (‘unfortunately’) of ‘won cause’ = OWN SAUCE

5.       Speed (without IT). (6) CELERY – ‘Speed’ = Celerity, ‘without IT’ giving CELERY.

6.       Sheds tears about her. (8) CHERRIES - ‘Sheds tears’ = CRIES ‘about’ ‘her’ = HER.

7.       The French are after bird…(7) COCKLES – ‘The’ in ‘French’ = LES ‘after’ ‘bird’ = COCK.

8.       …member of Communards act? (8) COLESLAW – ‘member of the Communards’ = (Richard) COLES, ‘act’ = LAW

9.       Organised destruction of cancers. (13,7) CONFECTIONERS’ CUSTARD – anagram (‘Organised’) of ‘destruction of cancers’.

10.   Went round the bend without first even realising the French left feeble return. (6,4) CORNED BEEF – ‘Went round the bend’ = CORNERED, ‘without’ ‘first Even Realising’ gives CORNED, ‘the’ in ‘French’ = LE ‘left’ ‘feeble return’ = ELBEEF giving BEEF.

21.   Martin ain’t ’arf ill in France. (9) MARMALADE – ‘Martin ain’t ’arf’ gives MAR, ‘ill in France’ = MALADE.

22.   Loud Scandinavians are heard following headless emu. (7) MUFFINS – ‘Headless emu’ = MU, ‘Loud’ = F (musical notation), ‘Scandinavians’ = FINS.

23.   Mel’s impounded American warship. (7) MUSSELS – ‘Mel’s’ = MELS, ‘American warship’ = USS.

24.   Sounds as though Londoner is deaf without Jeff! (6) MUTTON – ‘Sounds’ like Cockney (‘Londoner’) rhyming slang for deaf – Mutt and Jeff – ‘without Jeff’ = MUTTON.

27.   In comeback, Garfunkel introduces himself after Paul Simon has initially introduced opening act. (8) PASTRAMI ‘Garfunkel introduces himself’ gives “I’m Art” ‘in comeback’ means backwards giving TRAMI – ‘Paul Simon..initially’ = PS ‘introduced’ ‘opening act’ = A, giving PAS.

28.   Opt for light source over particles. (7,6) PICKLED ONIONS – ‘Opt for’ = PICK, ‘Light source’ = LED (light emitting diode), ‘over’ = ON, ‘particles’ = IONS.

29.   Fizzy drink either side of children. (7) POPCORN – ‘Fizzy drink’ = POP, ‘either side of children’ = the first or last letter of ‘children’ = C OR N.

30.   Lead around central Gorki before little Eleanor. (4,5) PORK BELLY ‘Lead’ = PB (chemical symbol) ‘around’ ‘central Gorki’ = ORK giving PORK B – ‘little Eleanor’ = ELLY.

31.   Papa runs around enthusiastically at first. (6) PRUNES – ‘Papa’ = P (phonetic alphabet), ‘runs’ = RUNS ‘around’ ‘enthusiastically at first’ = E.

32.   In spite of reversal, am I bitter? (6) SALAMI  - Spelt ‘in’ the clue – reverSAL AM I

35.   Disturbed deaf genius in loo. (7,8) SEAFOOD LINGUINE – Anagram (‘distrubed’) of ‘deaf genius in loo’.

36.   Direction for Alfred (he has to take direction in his profession). (8) SEMOLINA – ‘Direction’ = SE, ‘Alfred (he has to take direction in his profession)’ gives actor Alfred MOLINA

37.   Everyone’s inundated with small drinks. (8) SHALLOTS – ‘Everyone’ = ALL, ‘small drinks’ = SHOTS

38.   Heard a man using a crook to act as an agent. (9,3) SHEPHERD’S PIE – ‘a man using a crook’ = SHERPHERD, ‘to act as an agent’ = spy, which is ‘heard’ as S PIE.

39.   Strange herbs lead to extremely evident depression. (7,3) SHERBET DIP – Anagram (‘strange’) of ‘herbs’ = SHERB, ‘extrememely evident’ = ET, ‘depression’ = DIP.

40.   Thus fish studied. (4,5) SODA BREAD – ‘Thus’ = SO, ‘fish’ = DAB, ‘studied’ = READ.

41.   Turncoats. (5) TACOS – anagram (‘turn’) of ‘coats’ = TACOS.

42.   Cooked little algae. (11) TAGLIATELLE – Anagram (‘cooked’) of ‘little algae’.

43.   I’m told hardwood feels discomfort. (8) TEACAKES – ‘I’m told’ = sounds like ‘hardwood’ = teak giving TEA C, ‘feels discomfort’ = aches giving AKES.

44.   Soundly bind Edwina! (4,5) THAI CURRY – ‘Soundly’ means sounds like ‘bind’ = tie giving THAI, ‘Edwina’ = Currie giving CURRY.

45.   Raised a glass for a Cinque Port. (7,8) TOASTED SANDWICH – ‘Raised a glass’ = TOASTED, SANDWICH is one of the Cinque Ports.

46.   An outcome of pert ripeness! (5) TRIPE – ‘An outcome of’ = inset in the clue – perT RIPEness.

47.   Let’s get confused about neckwear! (8) TRUFFLES – Anagram (‘confused’) of ‘Let’s’ = T LES ‘about’ ‘neckwear’ = RUFF.

48.   Pi. (6) TURNIP  - Reverse clue. If you ‘turn’ ‘ip’ you get Pi.

49.   Van Winkle, Baker, Bruce, & Clapton. (7,3,5) VANILLA ICE CREAM – (Robert Matthew) ‘Van Winkle’ is known as VANILLA ICE, (Ginger) ‘Baker’, (Jack) ‘Bruce’, & (Eric) ‘Clapton’ formed CREAM.

50.   Clever gay brute’s perverted. (9,5) VEGETABLE CURRY – Anagram (‘perverted’) of ‘Clever gay brute’.
